How are your treks so cheap compared to other operators?
No mystery: we do not have an expensive office in Thamel ($0 rent), we do not pay commissions to booking platforms like TripAdvisor or Viator (you book directly), we do not spend money on Instagram or Facebook ads (we grow by word of mouth), and we do not add a 50-100% profit margin on top of actual costs. Our guides and porters are paid the same fair wages as expensive operators. The mountain experience is identical. We just choose to pass operational savings to you instead of keeping them as profit.
What exactly is included in your trek prices?
Every trek price includes: certified English-speaking guide, porter (1 per 2 trekkers, carries up to 15kg), all necessary permits (TIMS, national park/conservation area entry), teahouse accommodation (twin-share rooms), three meals a day on the trek (breakfast, lunch, dinner at teahouses), ground transportation to and from trailheads, and internal flights where required (Lukla flights for EBC). NOT included: international flights to Nepal, travel insurance (mandatory), personal gear, drinks and snacks beyond standard meals, hot showers and WiFi at teahouses (₹300-500 each), and tips for guide and porter.
Is budget trekking safe?
Yes. We never cut costs on safety. Our guides are government-licensed, experienced, and carry pulse oximeters, first aid kits, and communication devices. Our acclimatization schedules follow standard medical protocols. We have emergency evacuation procedures for every route. The money we save comes from operational efficiency (no expensive office, no booking platform commissions, no marketing spend) — not from safety shortcuts. In fact, our smaller group sizes mean your guide gives you more personal attention.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all our treks. Your policy MUST cover: emergency helicopter evacuation (up to 6,000m altitude for EBC/Annapurna Circuit), medical expenses, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. Without valid insurance, we cannot allow you to start the trek. We recommend World Nomads or SafetyWing for backpacker-friendly coverage. Helicopter evacuation from Everest region costs $3,000-5,000 without insurance — do not risk it.
What is the food like on budget treks?
Teahouse food on all treks — budget or luxury — comes from the same kitchens. There are no separate menus for expensive trekkers. Standard options: dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables — unlimited refills, the best trekking fuel), noodle soups, fried rice/noodles, momos (dumplings), pancakes, porridge, eggs, toast. Above 4,000m, menus get simpler. Food is filling and carb-heavy — exactly what you need. Budget tip: dal bhat is the cheapest and most filling option, and most teahouses offer unlimited seconds.
