Budget Annapurna Base Camp — Frequently Asked Questions

How does Budget ABC compare to Budget EBC?
ABC: $500, 9 days, max altitude 4,130m, no flights, shorter and easier. EBC: $750, 14 days, max altitude 5,545m, requires Lukla flights, longer and harder. The ABC panorama is arguably more dramatic (360-degree amphitheater vs. glacier views). EBC has the Everest name. If you have 9 days and $500, ABC gives you more mountain per dollar.
Is there avalanche risk at ABC?
The trail between Deurali and MBC crosses avalanche-prone terrain, particularly in winter and early spring. We only operate this trek during safe seasons (March-May, September-November). Our guides monitor conditions and time passage through exposed areas carefully. This is a well-known section and experienced guides manage the risk appropriately.
What is the hardest part of the ABC trek?
The stone staircase into and out of the Modi Khola valley at Chhomrong — thousands of stone steps that challenge your knees. The altitude at ABC (4,130m) is manageable with proper pacing. The cumulative effect of 7-8 consecutive walking days can be tiring. Overall, ABC is rated Moderate — harder than Poon Hill, easier than EBC.
Can I combine ABC with Poon Hill?
Yes, this is a popular combination. ABC + Poon Hill adds 2-3 extra days and approximately $130-150 to the cost. The trails share some starting and ending points. Ask us about combined budget itineraries.
Best season for ABC?
October-November is ideal: clear skies, stable weather. March-May is excellent with warmer temperatures and rhododendron blooms. We do NOT operate ABC in winter (December-February) due to avalanche risk in the Sanctuary corridor. Monsoon (June-August) brings rain and poor visibility.
