Budget Mardi Himal

Hidden gem, tiny price

Mardi Himal is Nepal's best-kept trekking secret. For just $250 over 4 days, you follow a barely-trekked ridge trail to the base of Mardi Himal (5,587m), with the south face of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) filling your entire field of vision. This is not a well-worn tourist path — it is a genuine off-the-beaten-track experience where you might be the only trekkers at High Camp. Four days, $250, and views that rival treks costing three times as much. The lowest price in our lineup for a trek that punches way above its weight.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A detailed look at each day of your Budget Mardi Himal adventure. Every itinerary is crafted to balance trekking, acclimatization, and cultural experiences.

Day 1

Day 1: Pokhara to Kande — Trek to Forest Camp (2,520m)

Drive Pokhara to Kande (1 hour). Trek uphill through dense rhododendron and oak forest on a ridge trail. Arrive at Forest Camp — a small clearing with basic teahouses. Walking time: 4-5 hours.

Day 2

Day 2: Forest Camp to High Camp (3,580m)

Continue climbing through forest that thins into alpine meadows. The ridge opens up with panoramic views. Machhapuchhre dominates the horizon. High Camp is a spectacular perch. Walking time: 6-7 hours.

Day 3

Day 3: High Camp to Mardi Base Camp (4,500m) — Return to Low Camp (2,990m)

Early morning push along the exposed ridgeline to Mardi Himal Base Camp. You are directly beneath the unclimbed south face of Machhapuchhre. Return to Low Camp. Walking time: 7-8 hours.

Day 4

Day 4: Low Camp to Siding — Drive to Pokhara

Descend the ridge through forest to Siding village. Drive back to Pokhara. Free afternoon by the lake. Walking time: 4-5 hours.

What Is Included

Included in Your Trip

  • Where Your $250 Goes

Full transparency: Drive Pokhara-Kande + Siding-Pokhara ($10), permits — ACAP + TIMS ($50), guide ($50 for 4 days), porter ($40 for 4 days), accommodation and meals ($80 for 4 days), coordination ($20). The cheapest quality Himalayan trek you will find.

  • Cheapest Trek in Our Lineup

$250 for 4 days of genuine Himalayan trekking to 4,500m. That is $62.50 per day all-inclusive. Try finding that anywhere else in the Himalayas.

  • Off the Beaten Path

While hundreds of trekkers crowd Poon Hill and ABC daily, Mardi Himal sees a fraction of the traffic. You may have High Camp to yourself.

  • Serious Views for Unserious Price

The view from High Camp and Base Camp of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli is genuinely world-class. Guides who have done EBC say Mardi Himal views rival anything in the Khumbu.

  • Guide & Porter Included

Essential on Mardi Himal — the upper trail is unmarked in places and can be disorienting in poor visibility. Our guide knows every section.

  • All Permits & Meals

ACAP permit, TIMS card, three meals a day, teahouse accommodation. Everything except your personal gear.

Not Included

  • International flights to and from the destination

Budget Mardi Himal — Frequently Asked Questions

Is $250 really enough for a proper trek?
Yes. Mardi Himal starts from Pokhara (no flights), the trail is short (4 days), and teahouse costs are lower than popular routes. At $250, we cover guide, porter, permits, meals, and accommodation. We make a small margin — enough to keep operating. We would rather do 200 treks at small margins than 20 treks at huge margins.
How does Mardi Himal compare to Poon Hill?
Mardi Himal is $30 cheaper, slightly harder, significantly less crowded, and takes you 1,300m higher (4,500m vs. 3,210m). Poon Hill has better teahouses and is easier for complete beginners. Mardi Himal has more adventurous vibes and closer mountain views. Both are 4 days. If you want comfort and ease, choose Poon Hill. If you want adventure and solitude, choose Mardi.
Is the trail safe without markers?
The lower trail through forest is well-defined. Above Low Camp, the ridge trail becomes narrower and less marked, especially in snow or fog. This is why a guide is essential on Mardi Himal — it is not a trek to do independently without route knowledge. Our guides have done this trail dozens of times in all conditions.
What is the accommodation like?
Forest Camp and Low Camp have basic teahouses — simple rooms, limited menus, shared toilets. High Camp has very basic seasonal shelters. This is NOT Poon Hill-level comfort. Bring a warm sleeping bag and low expectations for facilities. The views compensate for everything.
Best time for Mardi Himal?
October-November and March-April. The ridge trail is exposed to weather, so clear skies are important for both safety and views. Spring brings rhododendron blooms in the lower forest. Avoid monsoon (June-August) and deep winter (December-January) when the upper ridge can be snow-covered and dangerous.
